Last year I decided that my quality of life was more important than financial gain (a lot of which goes to the taxman anyway).
I am lucky in that my employer offers special menus so that employees can have up to five days more holidays in the year and or work less hours (to the equivalent of 90%), with equivalent reductions in salary of course.
I chose to work 90% this year which would give me an extra half day off a week. At first I thought of taking a long weekend every two weeks but in the end I have decided to work 4 longer working days and to have a day off each week.
This is my first week and my first day off. It feels good.
My wife also works at 90% (only theoretically because she does so much overtime that she regularly works more than 100% each week). I have persuaded her to take alternate Mondays so every other week we will have a long weekend together.
Now that’s what I call an increased quality of life. Let’s just hope that the financial burden will be supportable. I’ll just have to buy less geeky stuff each month
